Conan Doyle was a staunch supporter of Crown and Country, and offered not only his pen in defence of the realm, but also his own presence. During the Boer War, he worked in a eld hospital, dealing with injuries and a typhoid epidemic. His experiences gave him a firsthand view of the war, and informed his later history, The Great Boer War.
During the Great War, Conan Doyle could again be seen at the front, gathering firsthand experience of conditions in the trenches. He even took time to convert soldiers to Spiritualism. His experiences led to numerous articles, and once again fed into another of his works, his History of the Great War.
